Jussi Markkanen (born May 8, 1975 in Imatra ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who last played for SaiPa Lapeenranta in the Liiga .
Career
Markkanen began professional hockey in the Finnish SM-liiga , where he spent six seasons. In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , the Edmonton Oilers selected him in the fifth round at position 133. Immediately for the following season, the Finn transferred to North America and has since played for the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League . His time with the Oilers was interrupted when he was swapped for Brian Leetch with the New York Rangers in 2003 . The Oilers exchanged Markkanen back in the same season. He spent the time of the lockout in 2004/05 in the Russian Super League .
In the 2005/06 season Markkanen competed with Ty Conklin for the post as number two behind Dwayne Roloson . After an injury to Roloson, Markkanen got the role of starter in the Stanley Cup finals. Before that, Markkanen had not played for three months. Markkanen helped to catch up with the Carolina Hurricanes . In the sixth game of the final series, he managed the first shutout of his career. The decisive seventh game was lost by the Oilers and the Stanley Cup went to the Hurricanes. During the 2006/07 season he was number two behind Dwayne Roloson and completed 22 games. After the season, his contract was not renewed and he moved to the Finnish SM-Liiga to Jokerit .
In Finland he played 56 games and reached the semi-finals of the playoffs with Jokerit. After a season in his home country, Markkanen went to Russia in 2008, where he played for HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League . Between 2009 and 2013 he was employed by EV Zug from the National League A before returning to his hometown club.
In February 2017 he was loaned to EV Zug until the end of the 2016/17 season in order to have another substitute in the event of Tobias Stephan being injured . Markkanen played a competitive game for EV Zug before returning to SaiPa after the loan contract ended.
International
In the Finnish national team Markkanen was used in 2002 and 2004 at the Ice Hockey World Championship . He played for the Finnish junior team in 1994 and 1995 at the Junior World Championships.
