Pink (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pink (2019)

Pink , stylized own notation P! Nk (* 8. September 1979 in Doylestown , Pennsylvania as Alecia Beth Moore ) is an American pop-rock - singer , songwriter , dancer , show acrobat and actress . She has received several Grammy awards and is one of the most successful contemporary artists with over 40 million albums and more than 70 million singles sold.

Life

Childhood and youth

Pink's parents are Judith Kugel and Jim Moore. Her father, a Vietnam veteran , is of Irish descent and ran an insurance company. Her mother, a nurse, is of German-Jewish and Lithuanian-Jewish origin. Pink has a brother born in 1977. In her hometown of Doylestown, she attended Kutz Elementary School, Klinger Middle School, and Central Bucks High School West. She later got her high school degree via GED .

When she was seven years old, her parents divorced. For a long time Pink could not cope with the loss of her father, the central figure in her previous life. The relationship with the mother became increasingly difficult in the period that followed; she lost control of her daughter until there was an open rebellion. Pink began using drugs and drinking alcohol regularly. At the instigation of her mother, she was undergoing therapeutic treatment at the age of 14, but this was unsuccessful. Because she left school during the 10th grade, there was a final break: the mother threw her then 16-year-old daughter out of the shared apartment. After dropping out of school, she briefly worked in a food chain. During this time Pink wrote numerous poems in which she expressed her feelings and tried to process her own experiences. One of these poems later formed the basis for her song Family Portrait .

Origin of the stage name

P! Nk logo

The name Pink is based on personal experiences from childhood and teenage years: When she was visiting a summer camp at the age of eight, a boy pulled down her pants and commented on her blushing with the words "Look at that pink girl!"

Years later she watched the movie Reservoir Dogs with friends . The character “Mr. Pink "the memory of the childhood experience was awakened again and from then on she was only called" Pink "by her friends. She later decided to take that name for herself.

Private life

During the X-Games in Philadelphia, Pink met motocross rider Carey Hart in August 2001 . The two became a couple shortly afterwards. At the end of 2003 they separated for a few months. During this time, Pink had a brief affair with drummer Tommy Lee , Pamela Anderson's ex-husband . After she reconciled with Carey Hart, Pink proposed to him at a race in July 2005. They were married on January 7, 2006 in Costa Rica . In February 2008, the couple announced their separation but never divorced. In April 2009, Hart stated that both would give the marriage another chance. Pink gave birth to a daughter on June 2, 2011 in Los Angeles and a son on December 26, 2016. Pink is a member of the animal welfare organization PETA .

Experience with drugs

Pink had her first contact with intoxicants at the age of thirteen. In the following years she regularly took drugs, especially LSD , ecstasy and marijuana , but also heroin . After consuming various drugs and a large amount of alcohol, she collapsed in 1995; the overdose was almost fatal. This experience is said to have moved her to stop taking drugs from now on.

Musical career

Early career

Pink (2006)

Because she suffered from severe asthma as a little girl , she received singing and dancing lessons to improve her breathing technique. Over time, her vocal skills developed so well through vocal training that she became a member of a church gospel choir . Her father, who often sang songs to her and accompanied himself on the guitar , also taught her to play this instrument.

During her high school years she made her first appearances with the Middleground group, which only existed for a short time. She had more success on one of her regular trips to the clubs of Philadelphia, where a DJ noticed the then 13-year-old. He hired her first as a dancer and then as a background singer for his hip-hop group Schoolz of Thought. A year later she was allowed to perform once a week at Club Fever, where she also performed her first songs.

Atlanta was a center of the US music industry in the mid-1990s thanks to the artists OutKast , Usher and TLC . Convinced that she could become a “rock star” there, Pink moved there when she was 16 and founded the R&B group Choice with two other girls. A demo tape of their song Key to My Heart came to LA Reid , who signed the trio to his label LaFace Records . The song Key to My Heart appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Kazaam in 1996 . In 1998 Choice split due to musical differences. The album that had already been sung was no longer released.

During the making of the album, Pink was asked by producer Daryl Simmons to contribute to the title Just to Be Loving You . The positive result spurred Pink to work on her own songs again, while LA Reid signed her as a solo artist.

1999–2000: Can't Take Me Home

Pink's debut album Can't Take Me Home was created in collaboration with various producers such as Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds , Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs and Daryl Simmons , which was released in the USA in spring 2000. The success of the album and the released singles There You Go , Most Girls and You Make Me Sick was almost exclusively limited to the English-speaking world. In the summer of the same year she appeared as the opening act on the "No Strings Attached" tour of the boy group * NSYNC , which further increased her level of awareness.

For the soundtrack to the film Moulin Rouge , Pink re- recorded the classic Lady Marmalade with Christina Aguilera , Mýa and Lil 'Kim in early 2001 . The cover version achieved chart positions worldwide, became Pink's first number one hit and gave her an international breakthrough. For the song and the music video, she was also able to receive two major music awards at the VMAs 2001 and the Grammy Awards 2002.

2001-2003: M! Ssundaztood

When planning for the follow-up album to Can't Take Me Home began, there were differences between Pink and her record company. While she wanted to stick to the concept of the first album and the associated image of the singer, Pink called for fundamental changes. She wanted to have more influence on the creation of her songs and to go her own way, stylistically, instead of simply having the music put in front of them. The second album should bring her more recognition as a serious musician and songwriter, which seemed impossible with a mere continuation of the debut. When looking for a suitable partner for the recordings, Pink finally came across Linda Perry , ex-front woman of the 4 Non Blondes and one of their declared youth idols, by chance . Pink moved to Perry in Los Angeles and in the months that followed they wrote songs for the album M! Ssundaztood , which was released in late 2001.

Get the Party Started , which Perry had written and produced before working with Pink, was released as a pre-release single . The dance number immediately conquered top positions in the international charts and helped Pink achieve her biggest hit as a solo artist to date. At the VMAs 2002 the video clip was awarded in the categories “Best Female Video” and “Best Dance Video”. The subsequent releases Don't Let Me Get Me , Just Like a Pill and Family Portrait were also commercially successful; with Just Like a Pill it even landed at number 1 on the British charts.

M! Ssundaztood clearly distinguished itself musically from its predecessor. The predominant sound was now that Perry provided it with unmistakable rock influences. Since Pink had advised her to incorporate her own life experiences into her songs, the album received a very personal note. The open discussion of her past and the critical examination of her previous appearance as an artist led to mostly positive reactions. The album was able to book high positions in the charts and was sold more than twelve million times; in the UK it was the second best-selling album in 2002. M! Ssundaztood has been awarded gold or platinum in over 20 countries , and the album and the single Get the Party Started each received a nomination at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

Pink was originally supposed to support Janet Jackson's "All for You" tour in early 2002 , but the dates set for Europe were canceled in response to the 9/11 attacks . Instead, she went on her own tour for the first time from May to December. The “party” tour led from North America through Europe and Asia to Oceania. In the same year, Pink also appeared in North America as a supporting act for Lenny Kravitz .

2003-2005: Try This

In 2003 Pink took part in the soundtrack of 3 Angels for Charlie - Full Power with the title Feel Good Time . In the USA, she missed the top 50 for the first time, while the single was more successful in Europe. In November 2003 the album Try This was released . The turn to a rock-like sound, which Pink had already practiced with the predecessor, was continued with most of the titles. This was primarily due to the collaboration with Tim Armstrong from the punk band Rancid . Pink had accompanied the group on their US tour with the Foo Fighters and during this time wrote some songs together with Armstrong, most of which were later featured on their third album.

The first single was Trouble . The title, which is based on punk rock, reached the top ten in several European countries, Canada and Australia, but only ranked 68 in the USA. At the Grammy Awards in 2004 , Pink was recognized for Trouble as "Best Female Vocal Performance in Rock"; it was her first Grammy as a solo artist. Feel Good Time was also nominated in the category “Best Collaboration with Singing - Pop”. As a result, it became clear that the album Try This, despite good reviews, could not match the sales figures of M! Ssundaztood . The singles also fell far short of expectations overall. This was particularly noticeable in the USA, as hardly more than 700,000 units of the album were sold and there was no hit single. The song Last to Know wasn't even released there. For this reason only dates in Europe and Australia were set for the “Try This” tour 2004. After the tour ended, Pink took a break for several months. The duet Shine sung for Lisa Marie Presley's album Now What was the only new release during this period.

2005-2007: I'm Not Dead

In early 2005, Pink announced that she had written some new songs with producer Billy Mann and that she wanted to start work on a new album. The upcoming album, for which she subsequently worked with several well-known songwriters and producers, including Max Martin and Mike Elizondo , was originally supposed to be called Long Way to Happy . In July, excerpts from several new titles were published on the Internet, which gave a first impression of the musical style. The publication, initially announced for September of that year, was suspended and delayed by several months.

The album was only released in spring 2006, although contrary to previous announcements it was entitled I'm Not Dead . This was chosen at short notice because for Pink it was both a standpoint in their own development and a statement in the direction of many critics. The majority of Pink's fourth studio album was again very personal, with the majority of the songs reflecting topics from her life or personal views on current issues. The album reached high chart positions worldwide, including number 1 in Germany and Australia, top 5 in Great Britain and top 10 in the USA. It was therefore much more commercially successful than its predecessor. Around six and a half million units have been sold to date.

As a result of the single releases, there were sometimes fierce controversies about their content. The first single, Stupid Girls , already attracted a lot of media attention, as Pink addressed the social role of some female celebrities and clearly criticized the - in their opinion false - role model function for young girls. At Who Knew she dealt with drug use in her youth, among other things. Dear Mr. President , Pink's first political title was an open criticism of the US administration under then-President George W. Bush .

On her “I'm Not Dead” tour, Pink made 160 appearances worldwide on five continents between June 2006 and December 2007, including her first appearance in Africa. Over 300,000 tickets were sold for the concerts in Australia alone, marking a new record for a female performer. One of the performances in London was recorded and released on the Pink: Live from Wembley Arena DVD . As a reaction to the album's meanwhile falling sales figures in the USA, Pink also appeared in early 2007 as a support act for Justin Timberlake's “FutureSex / LoveShow” tour.

2008–2010: Funhouse

Pink on the Funhouse Tour (2009)

In October 2008 their fifth studio album was released, entitled Funhouse . The previously released single So What addresses Pink's attitude after breaking up with her husband Carey Hart. A total of seven singles were released from the album; After So What , Sober , Please Don't Leave Me , Bad Influence , Funhouse , I Don't Believe You and Glitter in the Air were released.

The open-air concert of the “Funhouse Summer Carnival” tour on July 15, 2010 in Nuremberg had to be stopped immediately after the encore began, the reason for this being that a rope from her harness was not attached in time for the show for the hit So what and Pink was then thrown off the side of the stage by a rope already attached to its safety device. She fell into the ditch between the stage and the audience and was injured in the process. Pink briefly returned to the stage and announced that the concert had to end.

2010–2011: Greatest Hits… So Far !!!

In November 2010 her first greatest hits album, Greatest Hits… So Far !!! with their biggest hits and four new songs, two of which have so far been released as a single. The two songs Raise Your Glass and Fuckin 'Perfect achieved high chart positions worldwide. The album also features Pink's version of Whataya Want from Me ; this was originally recorded for Funhouse , but was ultimately not used.

In 2011 she contributed the title song Bridge of Light to the animated film Happy Feet 2 . She also dubbed the character Gloria in the original English version.

2012–2016: The Truth About Love

P! Nk (2013)

On July 27, 2012, Pink released Blow Me (One Last Kiss), the first single from their sixth studio album The Truth About Love , which was released on September 14. The album covers the good and bad sides of love and became the world's sixth best-selling studio album in 2012. The second single Try was released shortly before the album on September 6, 2012. The third single Just Give Me a Reason with Nate Ruess was released on April 19, 2013. It was able to place successfully in the charts worldwide. It reached number one in the USA, Austria and Germany, making it the most successful single on the album. In Germany, Just Give Me a Reason was Pink's second number one hit as a solo artist. On June 30, 2013, the fourth single, True Love , was released, a duet with Lily Rose Cooper . Pink also recorded a song for the album with Eminem .

Pink wrote the two songs I Walk Alone and Lie to Me for the album Closer to the Truth by the US singer Cher . From February 2013 to January 2014 Pink was on the road on three continents with The Truth About Love Tour . In October 2014 she released the album Rose Ave with the singer Dallas Green under the project name You + Me. In 2015 she released Today's The Day, the theme song for the 13th season of The Ellen DeGeneres Show . In 2015 she was appointed UNICEF ambassador . In 2016 she wrote and produced the soundtrack for the film Alice in Wonderland: Behind the Mirrors with Just Like Fire . Also in 2016, Kenny Chesney and Pink released the song Setting the World on Fire , which reached number 1 in the US country charts .

2017–2018: Beautiful Trauma

In August 2017 the lead single What About Us was released from the new album Beautiful Trauma , which was released in October 2017. Also in August, she played the new song live for the first time at a concert on the Berlin Waldbühne . On August 28, 2017, she received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards . In September 2017 she gave a concert organized by Apple Music at the Theater at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles , where she sang other songs from the new album for the first time. That same month, she released the album's theme song, Beautiful Trauma , which she wrote with the Bleachers ' frontman Jack Antonoff . In February 2018, she sang the American national anthem at Super Bowl LII . The Beautiful Trauma World Tour started in March 2018 . In June she released the single Whatever You Want .

In October 2018, the single A Million Dreams from the album The Greatest Showman: Reimagined was released. The album also features a version of the single sung by her daughter Willow Sage Hart. At the end of 2018 it was rumored that she would perform at Super Bowl LIII . She refused, like Rihanna and Cardi B before, out of solidarity with the quarterback Colin Kaepernick .

2019: Hurts 2B Human

On February 5, 2019, a star was dedicated to her on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . That same day, she announced her new album Hurts 2B Human for April 2019 on the Ellen DeGeneres Show .

On February 21, she released the song Walk Me Home and presented it live with a medley of her hits at the BRIT Awards . She was the first international artist to receive the “Outstanding Contribution to Music Award”.

Acting

In 2001 Pink appeared in the Willy Bogner film Ski to the Max . The film was shot in IMAX format . In 2002 she played a rock singer in the remake of Rollerball . In 2003 she played a small role in Charlie's Angels - Full Power . Parts of this scene were used for the music video for Feel Good Time . In 2007 she played under her real name Alecia Moore in the horror film Catacombs - Death lurks under the earth . She made a cameo in the film Männertrip , which was released in Germany in 2010 . In 2012 she starred in the comedy film Thanks for Sharing, starring alongside Mark Ruffalo and Gwyneth Paltrow .
