Sylvie Vartan
Sylvie Vartan , actually Sylvia Vartanian (Wart Anjan) (* 15 August 1944 in Iskrez in Sofia , Bulgaria ), is a popular French chanson - and pop - singer and actress Bulgarian- Armenian and Hungarian origin. She is the sister of the musician Eddie Vartan (1937-2001), who also contributed to her career with numerous arrangements and compositions. She is also the aunt of actor Michael Vartan and the ex-wife of French rock musician Johnny Hallyday . Since 1984 she has been married to the American TV entrepreneur Tony Scotti, with whom she adopted a Bulgarian orphan .
biography
Sylvie Vartan came to Paris in 1952. In 1961, at the age of 17, she recorded her first record Panne d'essence with Frankie Jordan . Here the artist still sounded very childlike. In January 1962 she had her first big hit in the French charts: Quand le film est triste . At the same time, her future husband Johnny Hallyday was number one with the song Retiens la nuit . The two married in 1965. From this marriage, which was divorced in 1980, comes the son David Hallyday , born in 1966 , who is also a singer and actor.
Vartan was considered a teenage idol in France in the 1960s . Est-ce que tu le sais? , Tous mes copains , Dansons (all 1962), En écoutant la pluie , I'm Watching You , Si je chante , La la la (1963), La plus belle pour aller danser , Sha-la-la , L'homme en noir (1964), Dans tes bras , Cette lettre-là , Quand revient la nuit (1965), Mister John B , Ballade pour un sourire (1966), Par amour, par pitié , 2'35 ″ de bonheur , Un peu de tendresse , Moi (1967), L'oiseau , Baby Capone , Irrésistiblement (1968), On a toutes besoin d'un homme , Face au soleil , Apprends-moi (1969) were some of her many hits. They corresponded to the zeitgeist of the time and had little in common with the classical chanson, on which Barbara and Mireille Mathieu , for example, relied at the same time . Sylvie Vartan's music was more rooted in the pop and beat music of the 60s and hits . Not infrequently, she recorded international hits in French - such as Little Eva The Locomotion - Le Locomotion (1962). This made her the first top star of the so-called Yéyé Girls (French teenage pop movement of the 60s).
Vartan made several attempts to conquer the German record market. Even if it gained a certain popularity, it remained far behind the successes of Françoise Hardy , France Gall , Sheila and above all Mireille Mathieu. Even English-language records that were released in the USA and Great Britain failed to help the singer break into the hit parades there. She made the leap into the best lists only once: in 1984 she sang the duet Love Again with John Denver and landed at number 85 on the US hit parade. In return, she managed a career in Italy in the late 60s and early 70s . During this time she placed many hits in Italian in the hit lists and appeared regularly on television there. She even had her own TV show there.
She continued to be successful in France. In the 1970s she changed image and genre several times . Whether pop, folk , disco , cabaret , musical - the singer slipped into a wide variety of roles and was thus able to shape one of the most successful francophone careers. In addition, she repeatedly devoted herself to acting. Her studio album from 2004 was simply titled after her: Sylvie . In 2005, the live album Live au Palais des Congrès was released in 2004 . In 2007 she released the album Nouvelle Vague .
