history
The Manitowoc Company was founded in 1902 by Charles West and Elias Gunnell in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, as a manufacturer and repair company of ocean-going vessels and operated under the name Manitowoc Dry Dock Company. Over the years, the company became a conglomerate in mechanical and plant engineering and developed three divisions: cranes (Manitowoc Cranes), catering technology (Manitowoc Foodservice) and shipyard operations (Manitowoc Marine).
The company began building cranes in 1928 and the crane manufacturer Potain was founded in the same year. Potain became the world leader in tower cranes and was acquired by Manitowoc in 2001. Grove was founded in 1947 and, as the world leader in mobile cranes, was acquired by Manitowoc in 2002 for approximately US $ 271 million.
In 2008 Manitowoc took over Enodis plc (London), a manufacturer of food processing products that had operated as Welbilt until 2000. Enodis was integrated into the Foodservice division, which was completely spun off as an independent Manitowoc Foodservice, Inc. in 2016 and renamed Welbilt, Inc. in 2017 .
The original core business, Manitowoc Marine, was sold to the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in 2008 .
Manitowoc Cranes
In 1925 Charles West helped financially the Moore Speedcrane Company. In 1928 Moore could no longer meet his obligations and Manitowoc took over the company, development and production and sold the cranes under its own name. Today the company is the global market leader for crane solutions. The brands under today's global umbrella group are Grove, Manitowoc, National Crane (acquired in 1978) and Potain. In addition to the pure crane solutions, Manitowoc Company Inc. has a worldwide production, sales and service network. Today, almost 1,000 employees produce two cranes a day, including the Grove GTK 1100 .
