Andrew Bemkey

Andrew Bemkey (born August 6, 1974 in Libertyville , Illinois ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , bass clarinet , also clarinet , guitar , percussion).

Live and act

Bemkey, who grew up in Fort Wayne , received piano lessons as a young child. He moved to New York City at the age of 18 and studied at the New School with Jaki Byard , Makanda Ken McIntyre and Reggie Workman . From the mid-1990s he played in Reggie Workman's bands, as well as with his own groups such as KinShip in venues on the Lower East Side . The first recordings were made in 1993 with Sonia Jacobsen ( Avalanche ). In the following years he worked a. a. with Rashied Ali , Andrew Cyrille and with Frank Lowe , who introduced him to Billy Bang in 2003 . This was also followed by collaborations with Ori Kaplan , with whom he also toured in Europe, and Roy Campbell . In addition, Bemkey took part in various theater and dance projects, for which he also composed. He was also involved in community music projects in public schools. In the field of jazz he was involved in nine recording sessions between 1993 and 2011.
