Ori Kaplan

Ori Kaplan (* 1. October 1969 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli jazz - saxophonist .

Ori Kaplan began taking classical clarinet lessons at the age of eleven; However, he decided on jazz and played in the formation DXM, a Tel Aviv underground band. Kaplan moved in 1991 to the United States, acquired at the Mannes College (NYC) to the bachelor's degree and founded his Trio Plus with bassist and tuba player Tom Abbs and drummer and trumpeter Geoff Mann and played there in the big band of William Parker , the Little Huey Orchestra , in Alan Silva's Sound Visions Orchestra and other musicians around the Knitting Factory and the Vision Festival as well as Susie Ibarra . In January 1999 the Ori Kaplan Trio ( Realms ) recorded the first album for the CIMP label . Trombonist Steve Swell also worked on his second album Delirium . Cook and Morton reminded the Kaplan Trio's playing of the legendary Ornette Coleman Trio with David Izenzon and Charles Moffett from 1965.

In 2001 Kaplan received the Jerome Award for Young Jazz Composers . Kaplan also worked with the band Gogol Bordello , which incorporated influences from Eastern European music, what they called Gypsy Punk Cabaret , and formed the Shaat'nez Band with Andrew Bemkey , Geoff Mann, Adam Roberts , tuba player Marcus Rojas and drummer Tamir Muskat. The band integrated traditional forms of music from the Middle East, gypsy and klezmer music. After returning to Israel, he played with Assif Tsahar in 2002 and founded the Balkan Beat Box formation with Tamir Muskat in 2003 .
