The Embarras River is a river in the United States that has its source in Champaign, Illinois and flows south to join the Wabash south of Vincennes, Indiana . The course of the river passes Villa Grove, Illinois , Charleston, Illinois , Greenup, Illinois, and Lawrenceville, Illinois . The length is 354 km, the catchment area covers 6,300 square kilometers. The main tributary is the North Fork Embarras River, a left tributary that flows into the village of Oblong. Lake Charleston is dammed south of the city of Charleston.
Agriculture and oil production contribute to the pollution of the river, which is home to a number of threatened animal species. The Embarras River Bridge in Newton is a local attraction worth mentioning.
