Pike County was formed in 1818 from former parts of St. Charles County. It was named after Zebulon Pike (1779–1813), a pioneer and explorer of the area.

According to the 2010 census , Pike County had 18,516 people in 6,594 households. The population density was 10.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.47 people lived in each of the 6,594 households.
The racial the population was composed of 90.2 percent white, 7.2 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
