Clinton County was formed on January 2, 1833 from parts of Clay County. It was named after George Clinton (1739-1812), the first governor of New York State (1777-1795) and fourth Vice President of the United States (1805-1812).
A building in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 5, 2018.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Clinton County had 20,743 people in 8,165 households. The population density was 19.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.49 people lived in each of the 8,165 households.
The racial the population was composed of 95.5 percent white, 1.4 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.6 percent of the population.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 15.7 percent were 65 years or older. 49.8 percent of the population was female.
