history
Clay County was formed on January 2, 1822 from parts of Ray County. It was named after Henry Clay (1777-1852) from Kentucky , a member of the House of Representatives , the Senate and Secretary of State of the United States.
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Watkins Mill . 39 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 5, 2018).
