history
The original name when William B. Howard founded Lee's Summit in 1865 was The Town of Strother. In 1868 the city changed its name to its current one: The Town of Lee's Summit. The Lee’s component is of unknown origin, but locals suspect it originated with Robert E. Lee in the Civil War or Dr. Pleasant Lea.
In 1912, RA Long, the owner of a logging company, began building his property, Longview Farm , on the western outskirts of the city and part of Kansas City. When completed, it consisted of a mansion, five barns and 42 buildings on over 680 acres. There was also a church on the site, Longview Chapel Christian Church, completed in 1915 . The farm quickly became internationally known as a landmark.
