history
1976-1981
The two brothers Represas formed the band with some friends in 1976. They borrowed the name from the terms trobador and the communist party newspaper Avante! , while her musical influences came equally from contemporary Anglo-Saxon-speaking pop / rock music and traditional Portuguese music. They were also based on the work of the Portuguese resistance singers since the mid-1960s. The group was close to the PCP , the Portuguese Communist Party. They had their first appearance in 1976 at the Festa do Avante! , and in the same year they recorded their first album, Chão Nosso , which was released in 1977 . In the profound social upheavals after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the group gained growing popularity. The band has also performed internationally, including on the initiative of the PCP at festivals in Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria 1977), Sokolov (CSSR 1978), and at the 11th Havana Youth and Student Festival (Cuba 1978). In 1978 Trovante performed at the Festival of Political Song in East Berlin .
On the following singles and their second album ( Em Nome da Vida , dt .: In the Name of Life), the group worked on composition and arrangement with musicians such as José Afonso , Adriano Correia de Oliveira or Fausto Bordalo Dias ( Fausto ). From 1979 the group tried to develop beyond the PCP affine audience. This included modified song compositions, but also music lessons at the renowned jazz club Hot Clube de Portugal . The most visible sign of their change was the 1981 album Baile no Bosque (English: dance in the undergrowth), on which the lyrics no longer dealt with openly political topics. The album was released in the beginning Boom do Rock Português , a time of awakened interest in Portuguese-speaking bands, which were emerging in large numbers at the time.
1981-1999
Even if the band was musically not part of the boom , their 1981 album was still a great commercial success. Her music, which in the meantime also had influences from jazz , progressive rock and the Música Popular Brasileira , became very popular as a result. Their album 84 reached gold status in 1984 , and in July of that year they gave sold-out concerts at the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon, followed by a sold-out concert at the Teatro Rivoli in Porto. Your 1988 recorded before 8,000 spectators live album Ao Vivo no Campo Pequeno (dt .: Live at Campo Pequeno ) reached platinum status. In 1990, Um Destes Dias (German: one of these days) was their last album with new songs. Among them was the single Timor, the piece that was considered the unofficial anthem of the broad Portuguese protest movement in the 1990s for the independence of East Timor .
The band then showed signs of creative exhaustion and appeared less and less frequently. Since 1992 Trovante were considered dissolved. João Gil became known with other projects such as Moby Dick , Ala dos Namorados , or the supergroup Rio Grande , and produced other artists, including Mafalda Arnauth and Janita Salomé . Manuel Faria became a music producer, a. a. for Mafalda Veiga , Entre Aspas and Da Weasel , in addition to works for the theater and also for Sérgio Godinho . Luís Represas embarked on a successful solo career.
Since 1999
At the invitation of President Jorge Sampaio , the band performed again in 1999 on the occasion of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. Their concert was broadcast on the public television service RTP and was released as a double album, under the title Uma Noite Só (Eng .: Just one night). They performed again on October 12, 2006 at Campo Pequeno, and on May 22, 2010 at Rock in Rio , in Lisbon. On September 3rd, 2011 they played again at the Festa do Avante for the band's 35th anniversary ! , as with their first appearance in 1976. Even if the musicians do not rule out a revival of the band, they are still considered dissolved, despite their rare concerts on special occasions.
The band is known in Portugal to this day. Her best-of album, released in 2010, hit the sales charts there.
