Entre Aspas (Port .; "In quotes") was a Portuguese pop-rock - band from the Algarve .

Band history

The singer Viviane and the guitarist Tó Viegas formed the band in 1990 in Faro , where they lived. In the absence of a band name, they left the space between the quotation marks free when they set the date for their first appearance at Bar Morbidus in Faro in 1990. They still performed there as a duo, but then strengthened themselves with the former Opinião Pública bassist Luís Fialho and the drummer João Vieira. As a result, they decided to continue using Entre Aspas as the band name. In 1991 they took part in the first young band competition of the city administration ( Câmara Municipal ) of Lisbon , where they took third place. BMG Ariola (now Sony Music Entertainment ) signed the group in 1992, and their first album Entre sff was released in 1993. It was produced by Trovante musician Manuel Faria, as did the band's subsequent recording for their contribution to the Filhos da Madrugada tribute Project for José Afonso 1994.

Her second album Lollipop caught the attention of the critics and is considered one of the few contemporary examples of carefree pop music of international character in Portugal. With their third album Edelweiss they confirmed the impression, whereby the piece Uma Pequena Flôr stood out as particularly catchy and received frequent airplay . In 1998 they were subsequently invited by the radio station Antena 3 to take part in its acoustic concerts project, which resulted in their contribution to the Ao Vivo na Antena 3 sampler. In 1999 they were one of 20 groups in the tribute project XX Anos, XX Bandas for the 20th stage anniversary of the band Xutos & Pontapés .

In 2000 they recorded the album Loja dos Sonhos . With guest singer João Peste (singer of the band Pop Dell'Arte and others) and some innovations, such as influences from French pop music and the appearance known from Britpop groups, the album again received the approval of the music press. The acoustic live album www.entreaspasaovivo.com followed in 2001, which included two new songs as well as a version of Amália Rodrigues' piece A Formiga Bossa-Nova . From 2002 the band reduced its activity. The group has been dissolved since 2005. The singer Viviane (occasionally also known as Vivianne) then took up a solo career.

reception

The band is considered a pioneering pop band in Portugal. Their importance results from their catchy pop songs and their differentiation from the majority of bands after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, who did not play carefree pop music in Portugal, but mostly rock or politically motivated folk variants, or pop / rock varieties with local influences. This importance of the band can be seen, for example, in the continued high level of interest in their music (e.g. six-digit access numbers on YouTube ) and in current pop bands in Portugal who play their pieces. Occasionally, the singer will invite Viviane to do so.

The band sang, despite their focus on international pop sound, mostly in Portuguese and only occasionally in French , but not in English .
