Pop Dell'Arte is a Portuguese avant - pop - band from Lisbon .
Career
At the end of 1984 / beginning of 1985 the group was formed after the end of the new wave band Ezra Pound , in the Campo de Ourique district in Lisbon. Characterized by the New Wave, it was above all the varied vocals of the extroverted singer João Peste that first attracted the band, such as the originality prize at the 1985 band competition at Rock Rendez-Vous . The founding of the independent label Ama Romanta by the singer made it possible for the band to release records. On their debut album Free Pop was u. a. the Mão Morta singer Adolfo Luxúria Canibal guest musician. The music was an idiosyncratic mix of New Wave, Acid House and various styles of modern and past pop music.
In 1989 the group disbanded. In 1991 a compilation of their previously published songs appeared, and the band came together again in a new formation. After the economic collapse of the Ama Romanta label, the band released with different record companies. After their 1995 album Sex Symbol , the group entered a further period of rest, interrupted by occasional appearances. In 2010 a new album was released and brought the band back into focus on the country's music scene.
The band continues to perform live, for example at the fourth music, literature and art festival Festival Silêncio 2012 in Lisbon (with Rodrigo Leão and Mão Morta at Cinema São Jorge ).
reception
The band is primarily seen as the idea of its founder João Peste. This is characterized by an eccentric, inappropriate appearance. His texts revolve around drugs, homosexuality, glamor, but also allegedly everyday things that are alienated or ironically broken by unusual accents, a Dadaist language or other stylistic devices. Most of the time the band deals with bourgeois values and symbols of consumer society in a playful or critical way in music, text and graphics , often exaggerated and provocative.
After its formation, the band was considered to be an engine of the independent music scene in Portugal, because of their innovative music that spans all styles, but also because of their focus on the independent scenes away from the entertainment industry. The band also got its reputation as an independent band through the founding of the pioneering independent label Ama Romanta by singer João Peste. Together with the concert venue Rock Rendez-Vous , the label was considered to be an essential motor for the further development of the Portuguese independent music scene in the mid-1980s.
To this day, the band has retained its reputation as a creative formation, and is still considered an unsuitable and independent group. In 2010, the release of the first new album since 1995 received widespread media attention in the country.
