Rodrigo Costa Leão Muñoz Miguez (* 1964 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese musician and composer .
Life
Leão became known through his musical compositions and his participation in Portuguese bands. He co-founded the bands Sétima Legião (1982) and Madredeus (1985). As his solo career began to take shape, he decided in 1993 and 1994 to quit these bands.
His solo work combines a combination of modern-classical compositions with more traditional song forms and instrumentations . Various artists have participated in his recordings and tours , for example Lula Pena or Adriana Calcanhotto at Alma Mater and Beth Gibbons and Ryuichi Sakamoto at Cinema .
The spectrum of his work is compared with that of the film composer Angelo Badalamenti .
His album Cinema was very successful in Portugal: It reached number one in the sales charts and the concerts in Portugal and Spain were often sold out. In this album you can see the eclectic roots of his music and the influence of cinema. He has provided the music for film and television productions several times, for example in the French-Portuguese, cheerfully melancholy cinema production Portugal, mon amour or in the US film Der Butler (both 2013).
In 2014, Rodrigo Leão was invited by the Portuguese Parliament to give a concert to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution . In front of thousands of spectators on the wide stairs of the parliament building, he played on April 25, 2014 together with the Sinfonietta de Lisboa symphony orchestra , with Fadista Camané as a singer . The drum group Gruppo de Percussões de Lisboa and the children's choir Coro Juvenil da Fundação Musical dos Amigos das Crianças also performed. A highlight was the interpretation of the song Grândola, Vila Morena , accompanied by historical film recordings. The concert was then released on CD and DVD and topped the Portuguese sales charts. His two following albums in 2015 also hit the Portuguese charts.
