Sétima Legião was a Portuguese pop band from Lisbon .

history

The name means "Seventh Legion" in German and refers to the Roman army that was sent to the area of what is now Portugal, the then Roman province of Lusitania . The group was founded in 1982 under the influence of New Wave bands, especially Joy Division , and mixed them with Celtic folk music, especially from northern Portugal and Galicia . The influence of New Wave declined after the first album in favor of more poppy sounds, but the melancholy mood remained, and traditional folk music was emphasized more. Traditional variants of bagpipes , drums and flutes were increasingly used. After their 1987 album Mar d´Outubro achieved silver status in Portugal with over 15,000 copies sold, the following De Um Tempo Ausente (1989) sold over 25,000 units and was awarded a gold record . The singer Tereza Salgueiro from the band Madredeus was one of the guest musicians on the album. The following O Fogo did not achieve such high sales figures.

Rodrigo Leão left the band in 1993, and then the Madredeus, which he also co-founded, in favor of his solo career. Sétima Legião were considered disbanded in the country's music scene, and the 1994 Auto de Fé album with live recordings was considered a farewell album . In 1998, however, they surprised with a new album, which contained an unusually high proportion of contemporary electronic music and also a number of folk tune samples , from the television program Povo que canta by the ethnomusicologist Michel Giacometti from the early 1970s. The album received good reviews, but earlier sales successes failed to materialize, also due to the few activities of the band, such as appearances. In 2003 they last appeared with a concert and an accompanying exhibition about the group.

To mark the band's 30th anniversary, Memórias released a compilation of their most important songs in 2012 along with a DVD with old concert recordings and video clips of the band. During the summer of that year, the band played a series of concerts in Portugal, with a planned final farewell with the final concert on October 11, 2012 at Coliseu do Porto .
