Francisco Pimentel de Mello Ribeiro de Menezes (born July 15, 1965 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese diplomat . Before his career as ambassador, he was known in Portugal in the 1980s as a songwriter and occasional keyboard player for the style-defining band Sétima Legião .

Life

Menezes comes from a diplomatic family, his father is the ambassador Pedro José Ribeiro de Menezes . He grew up in a number of countries, including mainly Argentina, France, the United States and Portugal, together with his younger brother, the historian Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses (* 1969).

In 1982 Menezes became a member of the pioneering Portuguese pop / rock band Sétima Legião , for which he wrote all the lyrics. Until 1983 he did this from his parents' home in the USA, after which he went to Lisbon to study. His cousin Pedro Oliveira co-founded the band in 1982.

After completing his law studies at the University of Lisbon , Menezes joined the Portuguese Foreign Ministry in 1990 , where he worked for six years in the office of Foreign Minister Jaime Gama . He then went to the Portuguese Diplomatic Service and worked in particular at the Portuguese Embassy in Madrid and in the Portuguese Permanent Mission to NATO . From 2006 Menezes headed the office of Foreign Minister Luís Filipe Marques Amado .

On September 8, 2010, Menezes was awarded the Grand Cross of the Portuguese Order for Merit .

From 2010 to 2011 he was Portuguese Ambassador to Sweden , where he had previously worked in the embassy for a time. In 2011, the newly elected Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho brought him in as office manager. Menezes' wife Teresa and Coelho are old friends and political companions.

From 2015 to 2020 Menezes was Portuguese Ambassador to Spain . He has been the Portuguese Ambassador to Germany since 2020 .

Menezes remained a member of Sétima Legião until the band broke up in 2003 and also wrote some texts for the Madredeus group . Sétima Legião got together again in 2012 for a series of concerts, at which Menezes was again there and played keyboard at their performances. He also continues to write lyrics and poems privately.
