Michael "Mike" Ford (born July 26, 1952 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 267 games for the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Cowboys in the World Hockey Association (WHA ) as well as another 215 games for Duisburger SC , Kölner EC and ERC Freiburg in the ice hockey Bundesliga on the position of defender . He was also active as a professional in Sweden and Switzerland. Ford celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Winnipeg Jets by winning the WHA Avco World Trophy twice in 1976 and 1978.
Career
Already in junior hockey in the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) with the Winnipeg Jets and Brandon Wheat Kings , Ford showed his offensive orientation as a defender and was selected by the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League (NHL) in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1972 .
With Detroit's farm team , the Port Huron Wings , he reached the final of the Turner Cup of the International Hockey League (IHL) in the 1972/73 season . But not in the National Hockey League, but in its then competitive league, the World Hockey Association , the defender made the breakthrough. With the Winnipeg Jets , he won the title in the form of the Avco World Trophy in 1976 alongside Bobby Hull , Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg . He moved in 1976 within the league to the Calgary Cowboys and in 1977 to Sweden to Västra Frölunda IF . For the playoffs he was back with the Jets in both years. In 1978 he won his second title with the Jets.
From the Jets squad, he met two old acquaintances in the 1979/80 season at Duisburger SC , Ken Baird and Lynn Powis . After strong performances, the Cologne EC signed him . For years he was one of the strongest attacking defenders in the Bundesliga. For the 1983/84 season he moved to ERC Freiburg . This was followed by only brief engagements for a few games at the Düsseldorfer EG , the SC Langnau in Switzerland and in Freiburg, where the EHC was now second class. After the 1985/86 season he ended his active career at the age of 34.
