Guy XVI. de Laval (until 1501 Nicolas de Montfort-Laval , born October 1, 1476 , † May 20, 1531 in La Gravelle ) was a French nobleman with extensive possessions in Brittany and Mayenne , who lived mainly at the Breton and later French courts. He was Count of Laval , Baron de Vitré , Vicomte de Rennes, etc., as well as Lieutenant-General , Admiral and Governor of Brittany .

Life

Nicolas was the eldest son of Jean de Montfort, Seigneur de La Roche-Bernard († 1476) ( House of Montfort-Laval ), and Jeanne du Perrier, Dame de Quintin . Since he was a minor when his father died, he came under the tutelage of his grandfather Guy XIV. De Laval († 1486) and his uncle Guy XV. de Laval .

Nicolas spent most of his childhood at the court of Duke Francis II of Bretagne , where he had close contact with Anne de Bretagne , who was almost four months his junior . When Anne married the French King Charles VIII in 1491 , he followed her to the royal court and stayed close to her - the Queen became the godmother of his daughter Anne in 1505.

The guardianship of Nicolas ended on November 8, 1494. On October 29, 1501 his uncle Guy XV died. without offspring and left him the family property. In this context, following family tradition, he took the name Guy.

Guy XVI. remained in the service of the king, became lieutenant-général (1517), governor (1525) and admiral of Brittany. He corresponded frequently with his brother-in-law, Anne de Montmorency , to keep up to date with what was going on at court.

He maintained a court of smaller nobles from all over France and beyond, the extent of which can be gauged from the fact that in 1527 he ordered that 162 people should be paid directly from his household, and it is estimated that there are around 300 people in his vicinity every day lived. For some time he hosted a representative of the Portuguese kings. He is also considered a patron of the arts and a lover of tournaments - he competed more than 40 times at the tournament that was organized on the occasion of the arrival of the Mary Tudors in Paris (1514).
