The county of Rennes, located around the city of Rennes (called Condate in ancient times and capital of the Redons ), existed as early as the middle of the 5th century. In the 8th century it was integrated into the Breton Mark (consisting of the counties of Rennes, Vannes and Nantes ) - and in the following centuries it was always one of the contenders for supremacy in and the title of duke of Brittany .

Roricon , the son-in-law of Charlemagne, was ruler in Rennes around 800 . Erispoë, son of Nominoë , was installed by Charles the Bald ; he was followed by his brother-in-law Gurvand († 877). Gurvand's son Judicaal tried to gain suzerainty in Brittany, but was defeated and fell in the Battle of Questembert in 888 . Gurvand's son-in-law Berengar had to recognize the sovereignty of Alain the Great , Count of Vannes, who then became Duke of Brittany .

After Berengar son Judicael Berenguer († 970) had bought back its independence, succeeded his son Conan I. , Domnonée to subdue and the County of Vannes, then the county Nantes (990), but was then, as he rose further claims, but Defeated and killed on June 27, 992 by Fulko Nerra , Count of Anjou , at the Battle of Conquereuil . Conan's son Geoffroy I († 1008) was later able to restore the supremacy of the Counts of Rennes and call himself the Duke of Brittany; He concluded important alliances, married his daughter Judith to Duke Richard II of Normandy , but also submitted to the French King Robert II.

The county was awarded again for a half-brother of Duke Conan II , Geoffroy Grenonat († 1084). But after Conan's nephew Alain IV. Fergent had to force him in his place, the county of Rennes was finally incorporated into the duchy.
