Conan I. (Brittany)

Conan I († June 27, 992 at the Battle of Conquereuil ), called the Unjust ( le Tort ), was the son of Juhel-Berengar, Count of Rennes ; he followed his father in 970 and was Duke of Brittany from 990 .

After he had got rid of the guardianship of Wicohen, Archbishop of Dol-de-Bretagne , he seized rule of the county of Vannes in alliance with Orscand, the Bishop of Vannes (970-992) . He defeated the Counts of Nantes Hoël I and Guérec, finally subjugated the county in 990 after the death of the young Count Alain, and then proclaimed himself duke. Fulk Nerra , the new Count of Anjou, was concerned about developments in the west of his sphere of influence. He attacked Conan and killed him in the Battle of Conquereuil in 992.

Conan I is considered to be the founder of the Rennes family in the succession of the Breton duke dynasties. He was buried in the abbey church of Mont-Saint-Michel .

From his marriage to Ermengarde, a daughter of Count Gottfried I of Anjou , he had at least four children:
