County Laval

The lordship Laval and later County Laval with the capital Laval appears for the first time in the first quarter of the 11th century. The castle was built by Guy I. de Dénéré (or Guy I. de Laval), a vassal of Count Herbert I of Maine († around 1035).

The last member of the family of the Lords of Laval was Emma von Laval, who married Mathieu II. De Montmorency in the 13th century and brought the Laval lordship into their marriage. With the extinction of the male line of Laval-Montmorency with Guy XII. de Laval in 1412 the castle fell to his son-in-law, Jean de Montfort-Gaël, who kept the tradition under the name Guy XIII. de Laval accepted. His son Guy XIV. De Laval followed in 1415. He was a companion in arms of Joan of Arc and received from King Charles VII. 1429 the elevation of Lavals to the county. His descendants ruled the county until 1794. The best-known member of the family, albeit from a branch of the Montmorency, is Gilles de Rais , whose full name is Gilles de Montmorency-Laval, Baron de Rais.

In January 1642 Hilaire de Laval from the house of Montmorency was appointed Marquis de Lezay (Département Deux-Sèvres), in October 1643 he received permission to call this Marquisate "Laval-Lezay". In October 1748, the Marquis Gui André Pierre de Montmorency-Laval , who later became Marshal of France , was appointed Duke of Laval, the Duchy of Laval being formed from the Marquisate Magnac and the Barony of Arnac (both in what is now the Haute-Vienne department ), thus no longer had anything to do with the previous Laval rule. The title expired in 1851.
