Mathieu II. De Montmorency
Mathieu II. De Montmorency (German: Matthias ; 1184 attested; † November 24, 1230 ), known as the Grand Constable (le Grand Connétable), was a Connétable of France since 1219 . He was the son of Bouchard IV , lord of Montmorency , and of Laurette von Hainaut , daughter of Count Baldwin IV. He was the grandson of Mathieu I de Montmorency , lord of Montmorency, Écouen , Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and Attichy .
Life
When King Philip II of France conquered Normandy in 1204, Mathieu II de Montmorency was one of his most important officers. Above all, the capture of Château-Gaillard on March 6, 1204 is his merit.
In the next few years he was involved in all of the king's campaigns, up to the battle of Bouvines on July 27, 1214, in which he commanded the right wing of the royal army, and whose victorious outcome the French owed in large part to him. In the battle he captured twelve banners from the enemy, which is why the king gave him permission to expand his coat of arms from the original four to twelve eagles. Mathieu later joined the Albigensian Crusade , which was led by his brother-in-law Simon IV. De Montfort .
In 1219 he was made a connétable of France. He enjoyed the greatest authority under the reign of King Louis VIII . While Louis VIII fought the Albigensians, Montmorency was at the head of the royal army in Aquitaine in the fight against the English. He conquered Niort , Saint-Jean-d'Angély , La Rochelle and the Limousin , Périgord and Aunis regions .
After the death of Louis VIII, he supported his widow, Blanka von Kastilien , as regent of the minor Louis IX. against the nobility of the country, who hoped the new situation would benefit them. He commanded the royal army in the capture of Bellême in Le Perche in 1228 and forced the rebels to submit the following year, but had no way of consolidating his success, as he died on November 24, 1230.
