List of Portuguese ambassadors in Germany
The list of the Portuguese Ambassador to Germany lists the Ambassador of Portugal in Germany on. The two states have maintained diplomatic relations since the German Empire was founded in 1871. Before that, Portugal had representations in the predecessor state, the North German Confederation, and before that in individual German states, including envoys to German Hanseatic cities since 1641 .
Between 1974 and 1990 Portugal had an embassy in the West German FRG in Bonn and one in the East German GDR in East Berlin. After the end of the GDR in 1990, both embassies were merged in the Bonn embassy building, and the Portuguese embassy in Berlin has existed since the move in 1999 .
The Portuguese Embassy in Germany is located at Zimmerstrasse 56 in Berlin . There are also consulates general in Düsseldorf , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg , Osnabrück and Stuttgart .
Portuguese ambassador to the GDR
Diplomatic relations between Portugal and the German Democratic Republic began after the GDR was admitted to the UN in 1973. Relations only intensified after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and with it the end of the anti-communist authoritarian Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal. The first Portuguese ambassador to East Berlin began his work on September 4, 1974 .
