João de Vallera

João de Vallera (born June 1, 1950 in Malanje , Angola ) is a diplomat from Portugal .

Career

Vallera was born in the Portuguese colony of Angola. Long before Angola's independence, he returned to motherland Portugal, where he studied economics at the University of Lisbon . From 1974 he went to the Foreign Service of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry , as the third secretary of the embassy. After working at the Portuguese Embassy in Madrid and the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the EU , he became ambassador himself .

In 1998 he took up his first position as ambassador in charge, as the Portuguese representative in Ireland . In 2001 he became Director General for European Affairs in the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, before being the Portuguese Ambassador in Germany until 2006.

In 2007 he became Portuguese Ambassador to the USA and was therefore also responsible for other countries where he was secondly accredited , including the Bahamas . From 2011 he became the representative of Portugal in the UK until he retired in 2016.
