List of the Portuguese ambassadors in the GDR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Portuguese ambassadors in the GDR lists the ambassadors of the Republic of Portugal in the German Democratic Republic . Diplomatic relations began after the GDR was admitted to the UN in 1973. Relations only intensified after the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, which marked the end of the anti-communist authoritarian Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal.

The first Portuguese ambassador to East Berlin began his work on September 4, 1974 . With German reunification and the end of the GDR in 1990, the Portuguese diplomatic mission in East Berlin also ended and went to the Portuguese embassy in Bonn. Since the move in 1999, the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin has been representing Portuguese interests in Germany.

The embassy of the Portuguese Republic in East Berlin was located in the Berlin-Mitte district in Otto-Grotewohl-Strasse 3a (today's name Wilhelmstrasse 66).
