João Mira Gomes

João António da Costa Mira Gomes (born December 4, 1959 in Carnaxide ) is a Portuguese diplomat .

Life

He attended the schools Colégio S. Francisco Xavier in the Resteloviertel in the Lisbon district of Belém , the Escola São Julião in Carcavelos and the Liceu Nacional in Oeiras . From 1976 to 1983 he studied law at the Catholic University of Portugal . He then joined the Portuguese diplomatic service and worked as an attaché in the Portuguese Foreign Ministry . From 1987 to 1993 he was a member of Portugal's permanent delegation to NATO in Brussels . From January to July 1992 he was spokesman for the European Community Monitoring Mission in the former Yugoslavia . From 1993 to 1996 he served as Diplomatic Advisor to the Governor of Macau , and in 1994 he was promoted to Counselor .

In 1996 he took on the role of Office Manager of the Director General for Political Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1997 to 2000 he worked as a European correspondent and director of the department for common foreign policy, during which time he was also special coordinator for the Western Balkans from 1997 to 1999 .

In 2000 he became chargé d'affaires of the Portuguese embassy in Sofia , Bulgaria . In 2001 he became Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in France in Paris until he became the representative of Portugal in the Committee on Politics and Security of the European Union and Permanent Representative to the Western European Union (WEU) in 2005 . In 2006 he took over the post of State Secretary for National Defense and Maritime Affairs, which he held until 2009.

In September 2010 he became the Permanent Representative of Portugal to the North Atlantic Council in Brussels. On November 30, 2015, he became the Portuguese ambassador to Germany . In January 2020 he took over the office of ambassador to Spain .

Personal

João Mira Gomes is married and has two children. He plays tennis and does cycling and motor sports.
