António José da Serra Gomes, Marquis de Penafiel

António José da Serra Gomes , 2nd Count and 1st Marquis of Penafiel (born August 30, 1819 in Maranhão , Brazil , † December 30, 1891 in Berlin , Germany ) was an important Portuguese diplomat . For a long time he was the envoy of Portugal in Berlin and head of the delegation for Portugal at the Congo Conference in Berlin.

Life

António, Marquês de Penafiel , was born in Brazil to António José Gomes, Conde de Penafiel and Dona Carlota Joaquina de Serra Freire.

He married in 1861. In 1869 he became the first holder of the title of Marquês de Penafiel . In 1880 he was sent by the king to the Portuguese envoy for Prussia in Berlin. There he was in office until his death.

He received high awards, such as the Christ Cross, the Order of the Prince of Hohenzollern and others.

He was also head of the Portuguese delegation to the famous Congo Conference in Berlin in 1884 and 1885, which was supposed to regulate colonial affairs between the great powers in Africa once and for all.

The highly respected diplomat died in Berlin in 1891.
