Ernâni Lopes

Ernâni Rodrigues Lopes (* 1942 in Lisbon ; † December 2, 2010 ibid) was a Portuguese economist and politician who is considered the "architect" of Portugal's accession to the European Economic Community (EEC) .

biography

After attending school, he studied at the Institute for Economics and Finance ( Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) ) and graduated in 1964 with a licentiate . After training as an officer in the naval reserve , he was a research assistant at the ISEG from 1966 to 1974 and also became an employee of the Banco de Portugal , the country's central bank, in 1967 . There he was initially a technical assistant in the office for statistics and studies before he became director of this office in 1975.

Immediately thereafter he became ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1975 and remained in this post until 1979. From 1979 to 1983 he was head of the diplomatic mission of Portugal to the European Economic Community (EEC) and was also responsible for negotiations on accession to the EEC. During this time his 1982 took place Promotion to Doctor of Economics at the Catholic University of Portugal .

On June 9, 1983, he was appointed Minister-President Mário Soares as Minister of Finance and Planning in his government. He held this position until the end of Soares' term on November 6, 1985. He was again largely responsible for the conclusion of the accession negotiations and also introduced the program of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Portugal.

In 1996 he became director of the Institute for European Studies at the Catholic University of Portugal and was also temporarily managing partner of the consulting firm Saer .

Lopes died of lymph gland cancer after several years of illness .
