Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses (born October 20, 1969 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese historian and university professor in Ireland . In Portugal he is known to a wider audience as an author of historical non-fiction books , especially his biographical works (especially on Salazar ) and his treatises on Portugal's momentous path into the First World War .

Life

Meneses comes from a diplomatic family, his father is the diplomat Pedro José Ribeiro de Menezes , his brother is the ambassador Francisco Ribeiro de Menezes . As a teenager he changed his surname from Menezes to the modern spelling Meneses.

Meneses graduated from college when his father was the Portuguese ambassador to Ireland . So he began his studies in the Irish capital Dublin , where he also received his doctorate at Trinity College Dublin at the age of 26 . Since 1997 he has taught history at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth and Dublin.

As one of the main reasons for staying in Ireland, Meneses gives, in addition to the good academic environment and the quality of life in Ireland, the integration of Ireland into the Anglo-Saxon-speaking area and its scientific institutions, which increase the possibilities for research and its recognition. Meneses always remained connected to Portugal, both privately through his family and regular visits there, as well as through his work, in which he often deals with the history of Portugal .

His extensive biography , written in English in 2009 and then published in Portugal in 2010, of the longstanding and contradictory discussion of the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar attracted particular attention in Portugal. Their merit was seen above all in new knowledge not so much of historical facts, but rather in a more comprehensive understanding of the development of the dictator from an anchored Christian democrat to a ruthless autocrat. Meneses was able to clarify a number of unclear questions of understanding, which is why the renowned Portuguese daily Público counted him among the ten most prominent personalities of 2010.

In 2017 Meneses was inducted into the Royal Irish Academy .

Meneses is married to a British academic and the couple live with their two children on the outskirts of Dublin. He is fluent in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish.
