Maria de Lurdes Pena (born May 15, 1974 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese singer, composer, guitarist and poet who found her own musical language through Fado, among other things.

Career

Pena learned to play the guitar from the age of ten. She studied graphic design and visual communication at the Escola de Artes Visuais António Arroio in Lisbon. In 1992 she moved to Brussels, where she realized that distance is an important element of fado. Her debut album Phados was released on the Belgian label Carbon 7 in 1998 . In 2000 she returned to Portugal. She recorded the piece Pasión together with Rodrigo Leão . After that, it took almost a decade before new recordings of her appeared in 2010 with the album Troubadour . In October 2014, Pena sang at the WOMEX 14 Official Showcase Selection of World Music Expo 2014.
