João Viana

João Viana (* 1966 in Angola ) is a Portuguese film director .

Career

João Viana was born in 1966 in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola. After completing a law degree at the University of Coimbra , he studied film in Porto . Since then he has worked in production, sound, directing and screenwriting. He worked in various functions with directors such as Manoel de Oliveira , João César Monteiro and Werner Schroeter . In 2007 he wrote the screenplay for Paulo Rochas Olhos Vermelhos (premiere 2011).

In 2004, A Piscina was his first directorial work. The film was shown in competition at the Venice Film Festival .

His short film Tabatô , which deals with the historical village of Tabato between its traditions, the Portuguese colonial war and the internal political conflicts in Guinea-Bissau , won the DAAD short film award at the Berlinale 2013 as part of the Berlinale Shorts short film competition. His feature- length film A Batalha de Tabatô , which was released at the same time , also received an award there. The feature film was then sold in various countries, such as France, Belgium and Germany. It was translated into Russian by the Russian film translator Andrey Efremov and screened at the Moscow Film Festival in 2013.
