Overview map of the PALOP states

PALOP is the abbreviation for países africanos de língua oficial portuguesa , in German African states with the official language Portuguese . This group of states consists of the former Portuguese overseas provinces, which use Portuguese as the official language. These are in detail: Angola , Mozambique , Guinea-Bissau , São Tomé and Príncipe and Cape Verde .

The PALOP countries have concluded various agreements with Portugal, they are development partners in the areas of culture, education and law as well as the further development and preservation of the Portuguese language. In July 2014, the group gave itself an institutional framework that appointed FORPALOP (Fórum dos Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa) and José Eduardo dos Santos , President of Angola, as its first chairman .

Equatorial Guinea wished to be included in this group as it was a Portuguese colony from the 15th to the 18th centuries . It has therefore declared Portuguese (along with Spanish and French) to be the official language, but in fact it is not used in the country, apart from the Annobonesian language in Annobón , a Portuguese Creole language . In 2014 the country was accepted into the CPLP , the confederation of all Portuguese-speaking countries, but not into the FORPALOP - against the resistance of Portugal .
