The Luxembourg-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Luxembourg and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1891 . They both belong u. a. the EU , the Eurozone , the OSCE , the OECD , the European Space Agency and the Schengen area . Since 2018, Luxembourg has also had observer status in the community of Portuguese-speaking countries .

The bilateral relations are considered excellent. On the occasion of a visit by Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel to Portugal in early March 2014, Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho emphasized the historically good relations between the two countries. He thanked the Luxembourgers for the good reception of the Portuguese immigrants and cited the constructive cooperation between the two governments at all levels as a model for European integration . Bettel agreed with Coelho and referred to the Portuguese-born Félix Braz , who was Minister of Justice in his government. In contrast, both described bilateral trade as expandable.

Portuguese make up 16% of Luxembourg's citizens, making them the largest foreign group. For example, Luxembourg's leading newspaper, the Luxemburger Wort , offers numerous articles on its website, also in Portuguese . A number of Luxembourg politicians, athletes, entrepreneurs and cultural workers are of Portuguese descent, such as MEP Isabel Wiseler-Santos Lima , Grand Duchess Charlotte or national football players such as Gerson Rodrigues , Ricardo Aleixo Delgado or Joël Pedro .

When the Luxembourg house Nassau-Weilburg took over government in 1890, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg achieved its final independence . In 1891 Luxembourg and Portugal established direct diplomatic relations.

On June 21, 1893, the Grand Duke William of Luxembourg married the Portuguese Princess Maria Anna of Portugal . With Wilhelm's accession to the throne in 1905, Maria Anna became Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.

During the German occupation of Luxembourg in World War II , the Luxembourg Grand Duchess Charlotte managed to escape using a Portuguese visa issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes , Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, France .

In the 1960s, Portuguese workers began to immigrate to Luxembourg, workers etc. a. needed in its steel industry. The number of Portuguese in Luxembourg has risen steadily since then. In 1970, the Luxembourg statistical office STATEC counted 5,783 Portuguese, in 2011 it was 82,363, which corresponds to 16.1% of the population.

A first social security agreement in 1965 was followed by an expansion in 1979.

As early as 1988, the Luxembourg politician and later Prime Minister and Chairman of the Euro Group Jean-Claude Juncker was awarded the Grand Cross of the Portuguese Order of Infante Dom Henrique .

On the occasion of the visit of the President of the Portuguese Parliament Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues to Luxembourg, an exhibition on 125 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries was opened on September 13, 2016 in the National Museum of History and Art in the capital.

At the 12th Conference of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries in Cape Verde on July 17 and 18, 2018, Luxembourg was granted observer status.

Vicente Pinheiro Machado de Melo e Almada ( Visconde de Pindela ), Portugal's ambassador to the Netherlands, was the first Portuguese ambassador to be accredited in Luxembourg on May 21, 1891 . Eight municipalities in both countries are linked by town and municipality partnerships (as of 2018), as an expression of the close Luxembourg-Portuguese relations and the significant proportion of people of Portuguese origin in the population of Luxembourg.

In 2015, Portugal exported goods and services worth 460.7 million euros to Luxembourg (2014: 438.3 million; 2013: 341.8 million; 2012: 289.8 million; 2011: 266.6 million .), of which 24.4% food, 13.7% agricultural products, 11.9% vehicles and vehicle parts and 6.3% machines and devices.

The Portuguese cultural institute Instituto Camões has a language center in Luxembourg City and a lecturer at the University of Luxembourg .

Mutual exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events have increased in recent years, especially events of Portuguese culture in Luxembourg. In a cultural agreement announced since 2015, the mutual exchange is to be expanded and deepened.

Occasionally, there are joint productions between Portuguese and Luxembourgish cinema . The Luxembourg national football team and the Portuguese national team have met 15 times so far, with Portugal winning 13 times and Luxembourg winning once, one game ended in a draw (as of January 2017). They met for the first time on March 19, 1961 in qualifying for the 1962 World Cup , with Portugal winning 6-0 in Lisbon. In the following second leg on October 8, 1961 in Luxembourg, the hosts managed their only win against Portugal with a score of 4-2.

Football players of Portuguese origin, often of Luxembourg nationality, also compete for Luxembourg clubs and occasionally for the Luxembourg national team, such as Daniel da Mota .

A number of clubs in Luxembourg were founded by the Portuguese or are closely related to the Portuguese community in the country, such as the Sporting Club Steinfort .

The Portuguese and Luxembourg women's national teams have not yet faced each other (as of January 2017).
