action

Before Vita leaves her Cape Verdean homeland to study in Europe, her mother makes her promise never to sing. According to the mother, there is a curse on the family, according to which every female member has to die if they should sing in public. Arrived in Paris, Vita met Pierre. The musician recognizes her as a talented singer and persuades her to become a singer. She feels liberated and confirmed by singing. Vita then records an album that is a sales success. Now Vita fears that her mother might find out about her activity as a singer, and she decides to fly to her mother to remove the curse there.

reception

The musical comedy, which accompanies the cheerful and dramatic story with musical- like dance scenes and musical interludes, deals with African family traditions and the emancipation of women as well as the exclusion of strangers in Europe. The title Nha Fala (port .: A minha fala or A minha voz , German: My voice) also stands for the desire to be able to express one's innermost being unadulterated and freely.

The film was shot in the Cape Verdean cultural metropolis Mindelo and in Paris , the score was written by the well-known musician Manu Dibango . The film was produced by the Portuguese production company Fado Filmes , together with the French Les Films de Mai and the Luxembourg company Samsa Film . The leading actress Fatou N'Diaye, born in Senegal in 1980, learned Cape Verdean Creole for the film .

The film screened at a number of festivals, including the Venice Film Festival in 2002 , where it won awards. Nha Fala also won prizes at the Ouagadougou African Film Festival and the Amiens International Film Festival .

Nha Fala has been released on DVD several times , for example in German-speaking countries by the public-law foundation trigon-film in Switzerland.
