Apostle Paul Church

history

The brickworks moved a number of workers and their families to the Hermsdorf estate . The construction of a stop on the northern railway was of particular importance for the development of the place . Despite the brickworks being closed, the number of residents increased as the landowner began building summer houses and villas and selling land to developers in the 1870s . The wooded area and a brine-containing spring drilled in 1889 made Hermsdorf a popular excursion destination, which at times assumed the character of a health resort . This is how entertainment venues arose near the train station, such as the “Waldschlösschen” excursion restaurant located on a hill at Wachsmuthstraße 26-28 , which was operated from 1892 to 1920 with a ballroom , observation tower and artificial waterfall .

Building description

In 1934–1935, the architect Otto Risse converted the former ballroom into a hall church with 500 seats and expanded it into a building complex with a 39 meter high bell tower and a single-storey building wing as a connection to the two-storey parish hall . The architectural style combines the subtle historicism of the 1930s with the details of a restrained neoclassicism with the elegant features of the New Objectivity . The nave with a gabled roof covered.

The interior is mainly characterized by the oversized crucifix in the rectangular choir . Narrow, segment-arched windows on the long walls provide daylight. Such a window is located in the gable above the portal - behind it is the gallery for the organ - and in that of the choir behind the crucifix. The wooden beam ceilings give the interior a basilica character, because the middle one is arranged higher in the width of the choir. However, this impression is somewhat blurred by the mighty beams that cross the nave inside and are connected to the buttresses on the outside .

Bell tower

The tower is divided into five floors by narrow cornices . On the top floor, it has two or three coupled segment-arched sound arcades on the opposite sides . A tall tower ball rises above its low pyramid roof . In the bell room hangs a ring made of four bronze bells , cast in 1958 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock .
