Martinus Church

The Protestant Martinus Church is located at Sterkrader Straße 47 in the Berlin district of Tegel in the Reinickendorf district . The square-shaped hall church with a bell tower in front was designed by Eduard Ludwig in the architectural style of the Bauhaus school . At that time it was already considered to be of architectural value and is now a listed building .

history

By newly drawn residents rose in the parish , the number of parishioners Tegel sharply. The village church in Tegel was no longer sufficient, so that the community had to be divided. On April 1, 1957, the Tegel-Süd parish was spun off and became independent. Your church, which later got the name Philippus Church , was given to it on Ascheberger Weg. As a further increase through the construction of GEWOBAG on the site of the former gasworks of GASAG was to be expected in the municipal area, a second church in the northern part of the community was planned even before the completion of the church in Ascheberger way for the Berlin of the Synod one Architectural competition was announced. Of the three drafts submitted , the parish council decided in favor of Eduard Ludwig's. This crashed before the laying of the foundation stone on November 10, 1961. The project was completed in a modified concept based on his drafts under the direction of Karl Otto . The construction was carried out by the Philipp Holzmann company . On March 3, 1963 was the inauguration of the church by Otto Dibelius instead. The organ was only finished in July 1964. The church was given the name Martinus Church on October 31, 1967, the 450th anniversary of the Reformation Day .

architecture

The building consists of a large cuboid , a reinforced concrete skeleton , the side walls of which are divided by the protruding pillars of the structure . In between are smooth, largely closed wall surfaces. There is only a light strip for the community rooms in the basement . The entrance and altar sides are fully glazed. The basement under the church hall, in which the parish hall, the sexton and other parish rooms are located, is characteristic of this building . The higher-lying church hall required a flight of stairs to the portal , which is emphasized by a canopy. It is flanked by two high wall panels that support the belfry .

The glass wall behind the altar takes up the entire back wall of the church. It was originally transparent ; the architects wanted the church and its surroundings to come into direct contact with one another. Bishop Dibelius considered the transparent glazing of the walls of the church to be an enthusiastic view of the architects that would disrupt the course of the service . This marked the end of the glass church era in Berlin. The altar wall was therefore replaced by a glass painting based on a design by Götz Loepelmann , which shines intensely in different shades of blue during the day. Four translucent figures can then be seen in it, Jesus , Peter , James and John . The story of the transfiguration of the Lord from the Gospel of Matthew is presented . In the evening the glass surface looks black.

The 1960s was the time when reinforced concrete was a huge hit. No other material could span such a large space. Unfortunately, the building material did not keep what it promised. The quality of the concrete was too poor, the cover over the reinforcement was too thin. If water penetrates the cracks, the steel rusts and breaks up the concrete. The renovation of the Martinus Church is urgently needed.

The altar had to be replaced because the marble top was broken. The Kleuker organ has suffered so badly from the temperature fluctuations in the church that it is not worth restoring .

Bells

In the bell room hangs a bell made of four bronze bells , which was made in 1963 by the Rincker bell and art foundry .
