Albert Schweitzer Church

The Protestant Albert Schweitzer Church designed by Peter Poelzig is located at Auguste-Viktoria-Allee 51 in the Reinickendorf district of the Berlin district of the same name . It was completed in the 1960s and named after the theologian, Bach researcher and "jungle doctor" Albert Schweitzer . Along with the Church of the Blessing, it is one of the two church buildings of the Church of the Blessed Parish in the Reinickendorf parish , which belongs to the Berlin district of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

history

The congregation, originally a branch of the Blessed Church parish, became independent in 1968. The two churches have been reunited since 1998 due to the falling number of parishioners and the need to save money. The community center , which was built between 1966 and 1968, was inaugurated on April 20, 1969.

Building description

The architect managed to combine the building ensemble from the community center and the shopping center that had already been built in urban planning terms. The church is a solid construction made of reinforced concrete . Their roof construction made of prefabricated copper-covered shells forms a gable roof . On the north side, the roof sections extend to the terrace , which can be reached via outside stairs . On the south side they are pulled down to the level of the basement . At the gable of the nave in the east is a pyramid that extends to the ribbon windows below the roof surfaces.

The church portal is located in the glazed west gable on the terrace , behind which is the gallery with an organ. In front of the western front, a spiral staircase in a closed concrete cylinder leads from the basement, in which the kindergarten is located, to the gallery.

On the street is a low campanile made of concrete slabs with sound slots , in which a small bronze bell , cast in 1967 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock , hangs. It weighs 210  kg with a diameter of 70  cm and a height of 63 cm plus a crown of 12 cm. Their strike tone is des ′ ′.
