Life

Götz Loepelmann was born in 1930 in Berlin-Mitte and lived in Berlin-Frohnau until 1960 . Originally his last name was Löpelmann (with umlaut), but he wanted to differentiate himself from his father Martin Löpelmann . Loepelmann studied from 1950 to 1954 at the master school for arts and crafts (today the University of Fine Arts ) in Berlin. From 1955 he worked as a freelance painter and designer.

As a painter, graphic artist and draftsman, Götz Loepelmann has created an extensive work of pictures and sculptures since the 1950s, which shows an artist with profundity through craftsmanship and the choice of his mythical motifs (often underworld). Many pictures are marked by a compassionate empathy for the battered and abused. But political motives from all phases that Germany has experienced can also be seen again and again.

In 1961 he moved to Hamburg . Several children's books were created here. He worked as an advertising and exhibition designer a. a. for Volkswagen AG . In 1969 Loepelmann began accepting commissions as a sculptor for the city of Hamburg.

Götz Loepelmann taught as a guest lecturer at San Francisco State University in 1969/1970 .

His first marriage was to Rita Herms, with whom he had two children. Götz Loepelmann was married to actress Grischa Huber since 1999 .

In 1990 he built himself a studio on the island of Tenerife - "because of the light," as he said. In 1991 Götz Loepelmann finally emigrated to the Canary Island , where he lived and worked. For larger paintings he often used the very resilient hardboard instead of canvases . Most recently he worked on completing his catalog raisonné . In the summer of 2017 Götz Loepelmann was accepted into the archive of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

Götz Loepelmann died on August 31, 2017 at the age of 86 in Tenerife.
