Pünktchen und Anton is a children's novel by Erich Kästner , published in 1931.

content

The novel is about the girl Luise Pogge, called Pünktchen, who lives in wealthy circumstances in Berlin , and the boy Anton Gast, whose standard of living is far below that of Pünktchen. Anton lives alone with his sick mother in a small apartment. In order for both of them to make ends meet, Anton has to earn money in addition to school and help his mother with housework.

Pünktchen lives in a large apartment with her parents, the walking stick manufacturer Fritz Pogge and his wife, who both hardly have time for them, the nurse Fräulein Andacht and the cook Berta, known as "the fat Berta", and the dachshund Piefke.

Although her parents are wealthy, Pünktchen has to go begging with the nanny without her parents' knowledge, because Miss Andacht's dubious fiance (Pünktchen calls him "Robert the Devil") is extorting money from her. While begging, Pünktchen gets to know Anton, who also begs, but out of real need. His mother has had a major operation and is therefore unable to support the family. Despite their different living conditions, Pünktchen and Anton become close friends who do a lot together.

The highlight of the story is a break-in attempt by Robert into the Pogge family's apartment. For this he had his fiancée draw a plan of the apartment and also got the house keys. Anton, who observed the handover of the keys, warns Berta, who happens to be present, by telephone. She alerts the police, but the burglar arrives beforehand and is knocked unconscious with a gymnastics club when she enters the apartment. At the same time, Mr. and Mrs. Pogge meet Pünktchen and Fräulein Andacht begging red-handed. The nurse then flees. The Pogge family returned home and met the housekeeper as well as the police and the arrested burglar, who was identified by Pünktchen as Fraulein Andacht's fiancé. He is taken away and the remaining residents go to bed.

Pünktchen's father recognizes his social responsibility and that he has neglected his daughter. That's why Anton and his mother are allowed to move into the Pogges' apartment. Anton's mother takes the position of Fraulein Andacht, who fled after the break-in attempt.

Between the chapters of the story, Kästner has interspersed so-called “reflections” in which he addresses ethical questions based on the details of the story.
