Theodor Haberland, known from Emil and the detectives as the professor , has inherited a small house on the Baltic Sea. His friends of the same age Emil, Gustav with the horn, little Tuesday and Emil's cousin Pony Hütchen as well as Emil's grandmother are invited by the professor and his parents to spend their holidays with them in the little house on the Baltic Sea.

Emil and his widowed mother both have a conflict of conscience because Sergeant Jeschke (known from the first volume) asked for Ms. Tischbein's hand. Emil gives his consent, although he wishes to continue living together with his mother. His mother wants to marry less out of love than out of concern for the protection of the son in case something should happen to her. Both say nothing of this to each other. In this conflict of conscience, Emil goes on vacation.

The detectives and everyone else enjoy beach life. But it is not just a quiet vacation. The adventure begins when Haberland's parents drive to Denmark with Pony Hütchen and their grandmother.

The detectives get to know the artist Jackie Byron. He is a member of the acrobatic group The Three Byrons (all three of whom are native Germans despite their English name and, what Emil and his friends do not know, by no means, as advertised in the performances, a father and his twins). The leader of the group wants to leave Jackie, the one "twin", behind because it is too heavy for him. Instead, he tries to recruit a new "twin" for the acrobat group and falls for Hans Schmauch, of all people, whom Emil met on his Berlin adventure. Hans turns to Emil and his friends and they don't hesitate and set out to help their friend Jackie. After they find out that the head of the acrobat group is not Jackie's father at all, they collect money for him by presenting themselves on stage for a week after each performance at the cinema premiere of Emil's now filmed Berlin adventure. After her return from Denmark, Emil's grandmother reads a letter from his mother (daughter) to her grandson, in which she confesses that she would prefer to continue living alone with Emil. Emil decided to remain silent and let the marriage happen.

In 1974 the novel was edited into a radio play with the voices of Hans Söhnker and Edith Hancke .
