In 1955 he joined the Independent Theater movement, and since 1961 he has also worked as a director. In 1968 Fernandes founded the experimental theater group ETEBA (Equipo de Teatro Experimental des Buenos Aires) . With its 1970 production of La Leyenda de Pedro based on Peer Gynt , the ensemble was invited to Nancy and Florence in 1971 .

In 1974 he directed Dona Rosita von Lorca for Peter Zadek at the Schauspielhaus Bochum , and in 1975 the great Zenobia after Calderón. In 1979 he and Lew Bogdan opened the Institut Européen de l'Acteur in Nancy, which is dedicated to the training of professional actors.

At the Schauspielhaus Hamburg he returned to literary theater, which is enriched with improvisations, as in Shakespeare's Pericles (1981) and Der Groß-Cophta von Goethe (1982). He worked at the Schiller Theater in Berlin ( The great world theater of Calderón 1988, A dream play by August Strindberg 1989). Since 1981 he has been back in Argentina more often. In 1988 his production Reflejos de una vieja leyenda: Fausto premiered in Buenos Aires at the Teatro Nacional Cervantes there . After teaching at international institutes for decades, Fernandes founded his own school for actors and directors in Buenos Aires in 1996.
