history

Today's Portugal was founded in 206 BC. Part of the Roman Empire , to which 58 BC. BC Cyprus also came. They both remained under Roman rule until Cyprus became part of the newly formed Eastern Roman Empire from 395 AD and the Iberian Peninsula was conquered by Germanic tribes from 409 AD. Presumably there was also a mutual exchange of goods and people in these 450 years of shared Roman history, but no significant trade flows or people migrations between the two regions are known.

The paths of the Kingdom of Portugal, founded in 1139 and mostly Atlantic orientated in the course of its history , and Cyprus, which alternated under Genoese , Venetian , Ottoman and British rule, rarely crossed until the 20th century. It is worth mentioning the presence of Portuguese crusaders : after the fall of the Acre fortress in 1291 and the subsequent retreat of the crusaders from the Holy Land , the Order of Malta moved its headquarters to Limassol for a few years . Portuguese knights played an important role in the earlier Order of St. John.

Cyprus gained independence in 1960. Only after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the subsequent end of the colonial Estado Novo regime in Portugal did the two states establish diplomatic relations on March 5, 1975. On January 16, 1976 , Virgílio Armando Martins , Portugal's ambassador in Rome , was the first Portuguese ambassador to be accredited to Cyprus .
