The Cambodian-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Cambodia and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1996.

The bilateral relations are weak, as there are comparatively few current points of contact between the two countries. In contrast, the history of their relationship goes back to the 16th century.

history

The first documented Portuguese records of what is now Cambodia date from 1511 and come from the correspondence between Afonso de Albuquerque and King D. Manuel I.

Frei Gaspar da Cruz from Évora was the first missionary to come to Cambodia around 1555 , where he already met several Portuguese traders.

Diogo Veloso from Amarante can also be regarded as an important person in Cambodian-Portuguese history . He was provincial governor and ambassador of Cambodia to Malacca and Manila before he was killed in battle in 1599. In 1934 the French governor erected a statue of Velosos in Neak Loeung . Later the Khmer Rouge destroyed the statue.

Cambodia's head of state, Prince Sihanouk , declared diplomatic relations with Portugal and South Africa to be interrupted in 1964, out of solidarity with the African states and thus in protest against the Portuguese colonial war .

On April 17, 1974, Portugal recognized the Cambodian Government of National Unity.

A church with Portuguese gravestones existed near the capital Phnom Penh until the 1970s . They too fell victim to the destruction caused by the Khmer Rouge.

diplomacy

On 28 May 1996 accredited to Gabriel Mesquita de Brito , Ambassador of Portugal in Bangkok , the first Ambassador of Portugal in Cambodia. Portugal is still not present with an embassy of its own in Cambodia, but has double accreditation there through its embassy in Thailand (as of January 2017).

Cambodia does not have its own diplomatic mission in Portugal either, but is accredited there via its embassy in the French capital, Paris .

Mutual consulates have not yet been set up (as of 2016).

economy

In 2016 Portugal exported goods and services worth 2.93 million euros to Cambodia (2015: 1.25 million; 2014: 1.32 million; 2013: 0.73 million; 2012: 0.70 million .; 2011: 0.188 million), of which 65.9% machines and devices, 14.1% chemical-pharmaceutical products, 6.0% wood pulp and paper and 4.1% textiles.

In the same period, Cambodia delivered goods and services worth 6.42 million euros to Portugal (2015: 6.51 million; 2014: 4.43 million; 2013: 3.10 million; 2012: 2.58 million .; 2011: 3.07 million), of which 61.4% agricultural products, 14.3% clothing, 13.4% leather and hides and 5.7% vehicles and vehicle parts.

This means that Cambodia ranks 130th as a buyer and 105th as a supplier for Portuguese foreign trade. In Cambodia's foreign trade, Portugal ranks 48th among buyers and 61st among suppliers.
