The bilateral relations are weak, as there have so far only been few points of contact between the two countries.

history

Fernão Mendes Pinto was probably the first Portuguese in what is now Laos

There are no visible historical traces of the Portuguese presence in Laos. Fernão Mendes Pinto probably visited Luang Prabang in the middle of the 16th century during one of his stays in Thailand.

The country name Laos goes back to Portuguese traders serving the kings of Thailand . They used the plural of the name for the Lao peoples to name the area of today's Laos, in which a large number of Lao empires and tribes lived.

On March 13, 1957, Portugal recognized the independence of the Kingdom of Laos.

The Portuguese travel journalist Gonçalo Cadilhe toured Laos several times and wrote about it, both in his books and in magazines.

diplomacy

On November 29, 1995 , Gabriel Mesquita de Brito , Ambassador of Portugal in Bangkok , accredited himself as the first ambassador of Portugal in the Lao capital Vientiane . Portugal is still not present with an embassy of its own in Laos, but is double-accredited there via its representation in Thailand (as of January 2017).

Laos does not have its own diplomatic representation in Portugal either, but is accredited there through its embassy in the French capital, Paris .
