The Azerbaijani-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Azerbaijan and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1992.

Relations between the two countries are considered good, but not very intensive. Bilateral trade is determined by Portuguese oil imports, and there are few political, historical or cultural points of reference. The two countries are partners in a number of international organizations, including the Council of Europe , the World Bank , the International Monetary Fund and various UN organizations . In addition, there is a strategic military connection with the NATO founding member Portugal via Azerbaijan's membership in the so-called NATO Partnership for Peace .

In 2010, no Portuguese citizens were registered in Azerbaijan consularly, while 46 citizens of Azerbaijan were registered in Portugal in 2015.

After its independence from the Soviet Union on October 18, 1991, Portugal recognized the Republic of Azerbaijan on January 7, 1992.

The two states entered into diplomatic relations on August 4, 1992.

The President of Azerbaijan visited Portugal for the first time in 1996 on the occasion of the OSCE Summit in Lisbon, and a second time for the NATO Summit in 2010. The Portuguese President has not yet visited Azerbaijan (as of 2016).

Portugal's first state visit to Azerbaijan took place with the visit of the Portuguese Foreign Minister in July 2001, which was followed by three similar visits in 2002, 2010 and 2012.

In 2012 the first ambassadors were accredited in the other country. The two countries have not yet set up mutual permanent representations (as of March 2017).

Portugal does not have its own embassy in Azerbaijan, the country belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese ambassador in the Turkish capital Ankara . A Portuguese honorary consulate has been set up in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku .

Azerbaijan also does not have an embassy in Portugal, but is double-accredited there with its representative in the Spanish capital Madrid (previously Morocco) . There is also no consulate of Azerbaijan in Portugal.

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP maintains a contact point for the Azerbaijani capital Baku in its branch in Ankara, Turkey.

In 2016, Portugal exported goods worth 1.79 million euros to Azerbaijan (2015: 7.35 million; 2014: 3.95 million; 2013: 2.42 million; 2012: 2.71 million) , of which 26.1% machines and devices, 18.3% wood and cork, 14.3% food and 13.1% chemical-pharmaceutical products.

In the same period, Azerbaijan delivered goods worth 455.1 million euros to Portugal (2015: 417.9 million; 2014: 451.3 million; 2013: 428.4 million; 2012: 497.8 million) , exclusively petroleum products.

In 2016, Azerbaijan ranked 149th in Portuguese foreign trade as a buyer and 20th as a supplier, while in 2014 Portugal ranked 12th among buyers and 57th among suppliers in Azerbaijani foreign trade.

The Azerbaijani national soccer team and the Portuguese national team have met six times so far, with five Portuguese wins and one draw (as of February 2017).

At the U-17 European Football Championship in Azerbaijan in 2016 , the Portuguese selection became European champions for the first time.

Occasionally, Azerbaijani players also played in Portuguese clubs, such as Vəli Qasımov with Vitória Setúbal , Emin Makhmudov with Boavista Porto or Budaq Nəsirov with Sporting Lisbon .

The Portuguese and Azerbaijani women's national teams have not yet met (as of March 2017).

Other

At the 2015 European Games , Portugal finished 18th with ten medals won, while hosts Azerbaijan finished second with 56 medals; Russia won most of the medals.
