The Malaysian-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Malaysia and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1975. The two countries have not yet set up their own mutual embassies.

Historically, the time of Malacca as a Portuguese colony between 1511 and 1641 should be mentioned. The Creole language , which is spoken there to this day and is known by various names, including Língua cristã , Papiá Kristáng , Crioulo de Malaca or Melakan Portuguese, also dates from this time .

In 2015, 59 citizens of Malaysia were registered in Portugal; in 2009, 34 Portuguese citizens were registered in Malaysia.

In 1509 Diogo Lopes de Sequeira was the first Portuguese seafarer to reach the trading center of Malacca in what is now Malaysia. On August 15, 1511, Portuguese troops under Afonso de Albuquerque conquered the Sultanate of Malacca . They built the fortress A Famosa and Sultan Mahmud left the city.

Malacca then became a central trading and administrative base for Portugal's important Indian and Chinese trade , which ran from Macau via Malacca and Goa to Hormuz and from there around Africa to Europe. The Portuguese colonial empire thus became the first real world empire.

Malacca was under Portuguese rule until 1641, after which it fell to the Dutch, followed by the English in the 19th century.

In 1957 Malaysia gained independence from the British Kingdom . The Portuguese Estado Novo regime, meanwhile, held onto its colonies and became increasingly isolated internationally. There were also no direct diplomatic relations with Malaysia.

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, Portugal, which had returned to democracy, gave its colonies independence and realigned its foreign policy.

In December 1975 Malaysia and Portugal established direct diplomatic relations. Joaquim Renato Pinto Soares , Portugal's ambassador to the Thai capital Bangkok, was accredited on April 19, 1978 as the first Portuguese chief diplomat in Kuala Lumpur.

In 2008, UNESCO recognized the historic old town of Malacca along with that of George Town as a World Heritage Site .

For the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese settlement in 2011, various events took place in Malacca, including performances by Malaysian folk dance and music groups in the Portuguese tradition.
