The Bhutanese-Portuguese relations describe the interstate relationship between Bhutan and Portugal . The countries do not yet have direct diplomatic relations. There is also no measurable exchange of goods between the countries (as of 2016).

Historically significant was the presence of Portuguese missionaries in the first half of the 17th century, who are considered to be the first Europeans in Bhutan and whose records are the only Western documents on the time of the country of Bhutan's origin.

The unencumbered, but weakly developed bilateral relations are essentially limited to joint membership in international organizations, in particular the various UN bodies .

The contacts at civil society level are more diverse . Occasionally, students from Bhutan come to Portugal, for example to the University of Évora via the Erasmus program , and Portuguese initiatives are involved in the preservation of historic villages or in development cooperation .

In addition, Bhutan is a travel destination for Portuguese holidaymakers who are interested in special cultural and nature experiences.

In 2015 a citizen of Bhutan was registered in Portugal, in the Lisbon district ; in 2005, no Portuguese citizen was registered in Bhutan.

history

The Portuguese Jesuit - missionaries João Cabral and Estêvão Cacella came in 1627 to Bhutan u. a. to the city of Paro . This made them the first Europeans to travel to what is now Bhutan.

They met Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel . Her notes on it are the only known Western documents on the founder of Bhutan. The two missionaries were also believed to be the first foreigners Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel met.

In the further course of Bhutan's history, which was determined by the neighboring powers, no further relationship with Portugal developed.

The gross national happiness pursued in Bhutan , which has attracted international attention especially since the 2000s, was also known in Portugal and repeatedly taken up in the media. On the occasion of the opening of the parliamentary debate on April 25, 2016, the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution , the Portuguese animal rights and nature conservation party PAN called for the introduction of gross national happiness for Portugal as well.

The marriage of the Bhutanese king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to the civil Jetsun Pema in 2011 was also reported in Portugal.

In early 2015, a Portuguese commission traveled to Bhutan to develop a project for the conservation and restoration of historic villages. The background is the positive experience with Portuguese projects for gentle culture and nature tourism in old villages such as the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal or the Aldeias do Xisto .

diplomacy

Portugal and Bhutan do not yet have formal diplomatic relations, so there are no mutual embassies or consulates (as of the end of 2016).

The closest embassies are the representation of Bhutan in Brussels and the Portuguese embassy in the Indian capital New Delhi .

Culture

The Royal Academy of Performing Arts from Bhutan, founded in 1954, maintains traditional folk dances that date back to when the country was founded in the 17th century. In 2005 the ensemble first came to Portugal, where it performed in the Casa da Música in Porto .

Sports

The Bhutanese national soccer team and the Portuguese national team have not yet met (as of February 2017).

Portuguese football is relatively popular in Bhutan, although English and Spanish club football are even more common. In particular, names such as Cristiano Ronaldo , José Mourinho and Luís Figo are known . The most popular club from Portugal is Benfica Lisbon , but Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto are also known among football fans there.
