The Georgian-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Georgia and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1992. They both belong u. a. the OSCE and the Council of Europe . Since 2014, Georgia has also had observer status in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries .
history
After Georgia gained independence in 1991, the Republic of Portugal recognized the new state. On May 23, 1992, the two countries established direct diplomatic relations.
On July 23, 2014, Georgia became an Associate Observer in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) at the CPLP conference in Dili . In Georgia, the teaching and research of Lusitan Studies was promoted in advance , in particular from the 2012 cooperation agreement between the Portuguese cultural institute Instituto Camões and the state university in Tbilisi .
diplomacy
Portugal and Georgia established diplomatic relations in 1992. João Pacheco Luís Gomes , Portugal's ambassador to Moscow, was the first Portuguese ambassador to Georgia to be accredited in Tbilisi in 1996 . Portugal has not yet opened a permanent embassy in Tbilisi and is double accredited there through its embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara .
A Portuguese honorary consulate is present in Tbilisi .
Georgia has its embassy in the Portuguese capital Lisbon at Rua Fernão Soares No. 6-A. This is also Georgia's Liaison Office to the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
Georgian consulates are not open in Portugal.
economy
In 2015, Portugal exported goods worth 25.85 million euros to Georgia (2014: 27.07 million; 2013: 19.22 million; 2012: 5.74 million; 2011: 4.30 million) , of which 69.1% ores and minerals, 12.5% wood and cork, 6.2% paper and cellulose and 3.0% chemical-pharmaceutical products.
In the same period, Georgia delivered goods worth EUR 0.13 million to Portugal (2014: 1.49 million; 2013: 2.27 million; 2012: 4.56 million; 2011: 1.68 million) , thereof 81.7% clothing, 10.7% food, 3.8% shoes and 3.5% leather and hides.
In 2015, Georgia was the 72nd largest buyer and 158th supplier of Portuguese foreign trade. In Georgian foreign trade in 2015, Portugal was 83rd among buyers and 31st among suppliers.
Culture
The Portuguese cultural institute Instituto Camões is present with a language center in Tbilisi and a lecturer at the Tbilisi State University .
Sports
The football associations of both countries belong to UEFA , even if Georgia is geographically part of Asia.
The 1990 founded by the Georgian Football Association charge of Georgia national football team played only once against the Portuguese national football team (as of January 2017). On May 31, 2008, they lost 0: 2 in Viseu, Portugal .
The Portuguese and Georgian women's national teams have not yet met (as of January 2017).
