The Portuguese-South Korean relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and South Korea . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1961.

The relations are determined by bilateral trade, but also by cultural exchange and the increasing South Korean tourism in Portugal . In addition, Portugal shares South Korea's concerns about the threat posed by the North Korean nuclear weapons program and is one of the countries that condemn it.

In 2015, 182 citizens of South Korea were registered in Portugal, with 113 most of them in the capital Lisbon . In 2014, 224 Portuguese citizens were registered in the Portuguese consulates in South Korea.

There are at least two bilateral city partnerships , between Alcochete and Waudo and between Vila do Bispo and Tongyeong .

history

Portuguese map of Asia from 1630

It is believed that Portuguese sailors were the first Europeans to travel to Korea. The Portuguese trader João Mendes went ashore in Tongyeong in 1604 and has been the first Portuguese in Korea ever since. The town twinning between Tongyeong and Vila do Bispo goes back to this historical event.

The Portuguese missionary Luís Fróis had previously devoted ten chapters to Korea in his History of Japan (1549–1578) . Other Portuguese authors and cartographers also made early references to Korea, including Tomé Pires , Fernão Mendes Pinto , Fernão Vaz Dourado and Gaspar de Vilela . Thanks to the Portuguese navigators and missionaries, the first comprehensive information about the existence and nature of Korea reached the West.

After that, Portuguese attention focused on China and Japan, while Korea came under the rule of the Manchu as the Joseon Kingdom and consistently sealed itself off from abroad until the end of the 19th century. After that, the influence of Japan determined the politics of Korea, which became a Japanese colony from 1910 to 1945.

In 1948 the South Korean Republic of Korea and the North Korean Democratic People's Republic of Korea were founded . The following Korean War (1950–1953) sealed the division. The anti-communist Estado Novo regime in Portugal initially had no official relations with the Korean Peninsula until it arranged its first diplomatic ties with South Korea in 1961, without however sending an ambassador.

A change occurred after the end of the Portuguese dictatorship with the Carnation Revolution in 1974. In June 1975 South Korea opened its embassy in Lisbon, on 14 May 1977 accredited with Pedro Martim Madeira de Andrade , Portugal's ambassador to Japan, the first time a Portuguese diplomat in Seoul. In 1988 Portugal opened its own embassy in Seoul.

In 1984 Portugal's Prime Minister Mário Soares toured South Korea, and in 1987 South Korean Prime Minister Roh Shin-yeong came to Portugal. Since then there have been a number of state visits. Portugal's President Aníbal Cavaco Silva last visited South Korea in 2014.

The Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva joined the international protests against the North Korean nuclear tests in January 2016. He was very concerned about North Korea's threats to international peace and security in South Korea and expected clear steps from the United Nations .

Portugal maintains its embassy in the South Korean capital Seoul, whose administrative district also includes North Korea . There is also a Portuguese honorary consulate in Busan .

In terms of goods, 32.6% were plastics, 27.1% machines and devices, 14.0% metals, 12.2% vehicles and vehicle parts and 5.1% chemical-pharmaceutical products.

This made South Korea the 45th buyer and the 22nd supplier of Portuguese foreign trade in goods. In South Korean foreign trade in goods, Portugal ranked 73rd among buyers and 68th among suppliers.

tourism

The Korean market is one of the future markets for tourism in Portugal. Also due to the high per capita spending on travel by international comparison, South Korean visitors should be promoted more intensively.
